RINUWAT is a substantive conceptual project for collaborators Karina Utomo, Rama Parwata and Mike Deslandes. Firmly steeped in Southeast Asian traditional instrumentation and notation, the trio’s ancient Javanese name translates as “to liberate oneself from a curse”. Given the depth and intensity of their compositions, that malediction does indeed demand to be extricated.
The group’s debut album, ‘Dua Naga’, carries a weight of musical intellect and amalgamated calibration that is rarely heard in contemporary outfits, let alone in the extreme metal genres that would be a graceless definition of their sound. Each member peers at a set of graduations on their instruments - Utomo’s voice is as piercingly frightening as it is poetic and mantra-like in her delivery. Parwata’s exploratory percussion that seamlessly blends Gamelan notation with bold rhythms on the drum kit and Deslandes creating sonic templates that shift between eloquent guitar narration to walls of noise and droning assaults.
Senyawa are a seminal outfit in Indonesia’s thriving avant-garde music scene. The duo have developed a hybrid sound, weaving tribal and primitive sounds with industrial timbres and folkloric storytelling. Their sound is comprised of Rully Shabara’s deft extended vocal explorations punctuating the frenetic sounds of Wukir Suryadi’s self-built instrumentation.
During the pandemic, Senyawa released the new album 'Alkisah' with over 40 labels around the world, quoted by The New York Times as the new global jukebox for the future of international music industry.
Troth is the Newcastle-based duo of Amelia Besseny and Cooper Bowman. Together, they channel their love of nature and shared experiences into ambient vignettes and minimal-wave excursions, all inflected with their own sense of playful experimentalism. Their albums Flaws In The Glass (Altered States Tapes / 2020), Small Movements In Radiance (Not Not Fun / 2021) and Oak Corridor (Knekelhuis / 2021) were warmly received on their release. So far in 2022 they have released a 7" single on Swedish cult imprint, I Dischi Del Barone and have just completed a short tour of the UK and Europe as well as shows around Australia. Early in 2023 they have a compilation CD of early tapes forthcoming on one Swedish label and their third album, Forget The Curse, on another.
‘Disturbed and enchanted environmnents’, ‘deep spatial dynamics’, and ‘higher dub logic’ are all phrases used to describe Manek’s work. It’s revealed in a way that spurs on the attentive listener through live settings and in his productions - the details so detailed and calling to be heard multiple times for an exercise in a choose your own story-song. Silzedrek is the latest in a long list of aliases, conceived to explore clarinet and bass clarinet in a live setting. Utilising the Eastern European and Roma sonorities of the artist’s heritage, Silzedrek presents a deeply personal synthesis of time-dilating folk-jazz romanticism, heavy chamber dub and sense of smoked out inner space projected to the outer in cosmic proportions.
